Tips To Consider As You Prepare To Install A New Roof On Your Home

When you are a homeowner, replacing your roof is a decision you will be faced with sooner or later. And when you choose to get repairs or a replacement for your roof, there are some specific details you need to understand before hiring the work to be completed. Here are some tips for you to utilize as you prepare to install a new roof on your home.

Look at Upgrade Options

When it is time to upgrade your roof with a new roof replacement, this is a good time to look into any roofing materials that might offer your home more protection, a longer life expectancy, or a better warranty on the materials. By upgrading your roofing shingles or the underlayers, you can get a roof that has extra benefits and gives your home additional value. This can be a great item to consider if you are considering putting your home up for sale, as it can make the home more attractive to a buyer.

Talk to your roofing contractor about various types of shingles that offer, for example, extra UV resistance, heat-reflective coating on the shingles, or extra wind durability if you live in an area that is prone to hurricanes or tornado weather. And if you want to upgrade your asphalt shingles to a longer-lasting roof, such as a metal roof, you can plan for your roof to last up to 70 years.

Another important factor when you have the opportunity to make your roof better with a replacement is a choice in the type of roofing felt or underlayers to have installed. The roofing underlayers can provide extra protection against moisture leaks and ice dam buildup, especially if you live in a northern climate with cold winters.

Replace or Repair

With another option you have the choice to look at repairing the roof's existing damage instead of replacing the entire roof. This is a good option when you don't have the full budget to replace an entire roof and only part of your roof contains damage.

For example, the southern side of the roof gets more exposure to the sun every day, which damages and breaks down the roof's top layers from the UV rays. When the northern side is still in great condition, you may consider hiring a roofer to only remove and replace one side of the roof. Keep in mind you will need to look at your roofer's ability to match your shingles with the exact same color so your roof will look uniform.
