3 Things to do Before You Need a New Roof

Do you know how to deal with what happens if your roof starts to leak suddenly? Have you ever had to deal with your roof letting water through into your home? If you've answered no to either question, it's important that you learn what to do as soon as possible. By taking the right action as soon as possible, you'll be able to minimize the potential damage and the total cost to repair everything. Some things that you can either do or learn how to do now are as follows.

Find A Roofer

Although it can happen suddenly, getting a roof replacement isn't necessarily something that you want to have to decide on a whim. There are a variety of things that you should be considering when you choose a roofer to deal with the situation. These include not only the estimate that they provide to you but also the roofer's reputation. Some things, such as exactly how long it will take them to replace your roof, can depend greatly on the weather and how busy they are at the time, so they shouldn't necessarily be taken into consideration before your roof actually needs to be replaced.

Know Your Insurance Policy

If you need a roof replacement due to age, your insurance policy probably won't be of much help. It's considered something that you'll have to pay for on your own. On the other hand, if your roof is damaged as a direct result of a storm, then you might just qualify for partial or full reimbursement of all replacement costs. Before you ever have to deal with any roofing issues, it's a good idea to review your homeowner's insurance policy to know what rights you might have. Do not rely on someone else who has the same insurance company to tell you what is and is not covered — they may not have the same policy as you and may have more or less coverage than you do.

Get several estimates

It's best to wait until you actually need your roof replaced before you get estimates from any companies since the actual total may go up depending on the circumstances of the roof replacement. However, it's not necessarily a bad thing to have multiple estimates performed right now. This will give you a ballpark figure as to how much it'll cost you to get your roof redone. You can then start setting aside money so that you'll hopefully have enough ready by the time your roof actually needs to be replaced.
