What to Do if Your Notice a Leak in Your Roof

Water leaking into your home through the roof is never a good sign, but it does not always mean the roof needs replacing. Sometimes ice or wind-driven rain gets under the shingles of your roof, and the result can be water getting in and damaging walls, ceilings, and the structure of your home. Here are a few things to do if you find a leak in your roof.

Finding the Leak

First, you should find out where the leaking water is coming from. If the water is isolated to one area, it is easier to determine how it is getting through the roof. If you can not find the leak, you will need to call a roofing company and have them come out to help you find the leak.

In the winter, water can freeze under the shingles and start to form ice dams that do not allow additional water to drain correctly. The more the ice damns build, the more problems they cause, so looking for the leak can often mean finding the spots where the ice is forming and then breaking it up so that the water can drain.

Hiring a Roofer

For serious leaks or ones that are tough to find, you may want to have a roofing company come and inspect the roof for you. The roofing company will track down what is causing the leak. If the roof is still in good shape and the leak is not very large, the roofing company may be able to seal the area or replace a few singles to stop the leak.

If you are having trouble with ice forming along the edge of the roof, the roofing company can install aluminum flashing along the edge of the roof, so the ice slides off or does not form at all. The flashing or drip edge will also protect the edge of the roof when you put a ladder up against it and keeps the edge looking nice as well.

The roofing company will then check the wood under the part of the roof that is leaking for you to see if any rot or mold is forming there. If the wood is still in good shape and the leak is easily fixed, the roofer will take care of it for you and you can get a few more years out of your roof. If the damage is more extensive, the roofing company can help you replace broken parts and get your home watertight again.

If your roof is leaking, contact roofing companies like Durable Roofing Company.
